The voices that I hear
When I bought my first Mac - an LC 475 - back in 1993, one of the delights was MacInTalk, the built-in speech synthesis. I like the idea of my computer talking to me - just like computers in films. But then Apple seemed to stop development of their voices - pretty much the same selection ships twelve years later with Mac OS X. And they all have American accents.

But a couple of weeks ago, qidane pointed out Cepstral, a web site that sells voices, including a couple with English accents. At last my computer sounds human! (Well, it still sounds a little strangulated, but now its British strangulated.)

So now iChat and Skype tell me who is becoming available, and Mail tells me the sender of new messages as they arrive. Classy.
